Body mass index (BMI) is a quick screening tool that compares your weight to your height, computed by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. This calculator works out your BMI and the healthy weight range for your height, with a reminder that it is a screening index, not a medical diagnosis.

Formula

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Healthy weight range = your height (m)² × 18.5 to your height (m)² × 24.9.

When is this useful?

Use this calculator when reviewing your weight and height regularly, or when starting a diet or exercise plan, to know your BMI and healthy weight range as a starting point.

Worked example

Example using the calculator’s values: weight 75 kg and height 175 cm.
Your BMI is about 24.5.
The healthy weight range for your height is about 56.7 – 76.3 kg.

Assumptions

  • BMI is a screening index, not a medical diagnosis.
  • The healthy range here is based on a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
  • The benchmark may differ for athletes with high muscle mass and some populations.
  • The calculator converts units automatically when pounds or metres are chosen.
  • Results are estimates for general awareness.

Common mistakes

  • Entering weight in pounds while choosing kilograms, or mixing the two units.
  • Entering height in centimetres where metres are expected, which inflates the result hugely.
  • Assuming the stone unit is supported.
  • Treating the index as a final verdict while ignoring that muscle and body frame affect the meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. It is a quick screening tool that does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can misclassify athletes with high muscle mass and some populations.

What does the healthy weight range mean?

It is the span of weights that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height — a reference frame, not an exact target imposed on you.

Does this screening suit children or pregnant women?

No. BMI benchmarks are set for adults. Children and pregnant women have their own ranges and assessments that need a professional.

Methodology and review

The calculator divides weight by the square of height, then computes the healthy weight bounds by multiplying the square of height by 18.5 and 24.9, converting units automatically.
